Our stories

As a *young climate activist*, I faced *barriers* just to get into the sector. Recruitment needs to change.

What was your journey into the climate/environmental sector?

It started with student activism; petitions, campaigns and pushing my university to divest. After nearly a year of applying, I finally got into a conservation organisation.

What challenges have you faced?

The entry barriers are huge. So many unpaid roles, and the paid ones expect years of experience. There’s little support in recruitment for people starting out.

How has your identity shaped your experience?

It’s made me hyper-aware of who gets heard. I’ve had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously, but I’m also cautious not to be seen as “too passionate” because of the angry black person stereotype.

What change do you want to see in this space and why does PACE Index matter?

We need a sector that reflects the communities it serves. PACE Index shows where real change is happening, and where it’s not. More organisations need to engage, so that voices like mine aren’t just heard, but acted on.
